IQ Test Scores: The Basics of IQ Score Interpretation

Tell me this is not true! There are a lot of people I know whose IQ are really low, yet, enjoying the luxuries in life. I have a fairly high IQ, yet, still struggling to find life's direction somewhere -- even blogging to at least earn some more. What do you think?

Apparently, the IQ gives a good indication of the occupational group that a person will end up in, though not of course the specific occupation. In the book, Know Your Child’s IQ, Glen Wilson and Diana Grylls outline occupations typical of various IQ levels:
140Top Civil Servants; Professors and Research Scientists.
130Physicians and Surgeons; Lawyers; Engineers (Civil and Mechanical)
120School Teachers; Pharmacists; Accountants; Nurses; Stenographers; Managers.
110Foremen; Clerks; Telephone Operators; Salesmen; Policemen; Electricians.

90Laborers; Gardeners; Upholsterers; Farmhands; Miners; Factory Packers and Sorters.

Comment Review:
It makes perfect sense, if you think about it.

One way that IQ may be improved is by training one's brain via the ongoing stimulation of the mind, usually in the form of learning and thinking exercises. Because of this, people with a higher IQ tend to have been exposed to more of these things, and also tend to actively seek out new and more complex resources with which to continue engaging their mind.

Contrasting with this, people with lower IQ often may find mentally engaging material more easily than those with higher IQ. In addition, they tend not to seek such material out as frequently or with as much fervour, as they can usually find their lower need for mental stimulation is more easily met.

While this doesn't seem of particular importance, one must also consider the energy each person invests in the meeting of their various needs. A person who spends much of their energy seeking further mental stimulation, generally has less energy to pour into other pursuits such as obtaining or creating those other luxuries in life. As a result, those that have a lower IQ - along with the lower mental energy costs that accompany it - paradoxically have the upper hand, or rather the upper mind, when it comes to enjoying those other luxuries.

If one can find a way to channel their search for mental stimulation into something they perceive as a meaningful objective, then they have a marked advantage over those with a lower IQ. Without a meaningful outlet however, a person with a high IQ may easily slip into the habit of routinely exhausting themselves in that search - and the risk of that happening merely compounds as IQ rises.

Statistically, you will find that the higher a person's IQ, the greater their risk of developing depressive disorders. I have theories which relate this higher prevalence to a greater desire for existential meaning, gained through resources that facilitate growth of the mind by providing mental stimulation, and which is used to create and define purpose in the individual's life. In essense, I believe that the more difficulty an individual has in finding meaning, the more likely it is that the individual will become depressed - and the higher IQ they have, the harder it is for them to find that much-needed meaning.

While I do find it ironic, I am certainly not surprised that those with a lower IQ tend to enjoy life's luxuries more easily; Those of us with a high IQ are usually far too busy pouring our energy into finding meaning, to be able to spare a moment to appreciate those of life's luxuries that we each have access to.
